MacOS 27 Golden Gate

macOS 27 Golden Gate is the newest macOS, released September 14, 2026. A fast way to upgrade macOS 27, the new features including Siri AI, and which Macs are compatible.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is the latest macOS version, released September 14, 2026, as a free upgrade for every compatible Mac. This article covers a fast way to upgrade macOS 27, the new features including Siri AI, and which Macs are compatible.

Two things make macOS 27 Golden Gate a notable release. It is the first macOS version that runs only on Apple Silicon Macs, dropping support for every Intel Mac. It also brings Siri AI, Apple's rebuilt conversational assistant, which ships with the September 14 release but stays labeled a beta, in English only, with daily usage limits. Reviewers compare macOS 27 Golden Gate to the old Mac OS X Snow Leopard release: a stability and performance update rather than a redesign.

Before you get started

Before you start an upgrade, get useful apps from Setapp (Get Backup Pro is good for saving backups). I've used Setapp for years, paying a low monthly subscription to get apps I need. They offer a Setapp free 7-day trial that I recommend. Check it out.

When was macOS 27 released

Apple follows the same yearly schedule for each macOS release. Apple announced macOS 27 Golden Gate at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2026. Developer betas ran through the summer, and the public beta arrived on July 13, 2026. Apple confirmed the release date at its September 9, 2026 event and shipped the release candidate to developers the same day. macOS 27 Golden Gate arrived on September 14, 2026, alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. It is a free upgrade for every compatible Mac.

How to get macOS 27 Golden Gate

Like every macOS version, macOS 27 Golden Gate is a free upgrade for compatible Macs. Here is how to get it:

Should you upgrade to macOS 27?

If you are weighing macOS 27 against keeping earlier versions, see Tahoe vs Golden Gate for a side-by-side comparison.

If you have an Intel Mac, macOS 27 is not for you. It runs only on Apple Silicon. Your Mac stays on macOS Tahoe 26, the final version for Intel Macs. Tahoe 26.7, released alongside macOS 27, begins two years of security-only updates, so expect those updates into 2028. Or you can buy a new Mac (sigh).

What's significant in macOS 27

MacOS 27 Golden Gate completes two long transitions. It ends the Intel era and makes Apple Silicon the only platform for new macOS versions. It also begins Apple's Siri AI rollout, the conversational Siri that Apple first promised in 2024.

At the same time, Apple refined the Liquid Glass design introduced in macOS Tahoe to address readability complaints, rather than giving it a new look. The aim for macOS 27 Golden Gate is refinement: better performance, more stability, and a clearer interface.

New features in macOS 27 Golden Gate

Apple unveiled these features at the WWDC keynote on June 8, 2026, and published the release notes on September 9, 2026. Most arrive with the September 14 release, though Siri AI stays labeled a beta and some features carry usage limits. One feature, automatic password fixes in the Passwords app, is held back for a later update.

A smarter Siri with Siri AI

The biggest change in macOS 27 Golden Gate is Siri AI, Apple's rebuilt assistant. It is built into Spotlight, so you type a request where you already search, and it answers questions on almost any topic. This replaces the old "Type to Siri" feature.

Siri AI holds a back-and-forth conversation, so you can ask follow-up questions. It draws on your own context to find things across Mail, Messages, Photos, and more, and it can carry out actions in your apps when you ask. A new dedicated Siri app keeps your past conversations so you can revisit and resume them, and those conversations sync through iCloud across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. In System Settings > Siri, you choose whether to keep conversations for 30 days, 1 year, or forever. You can also switch it to use ChatGPT instead of Siri AI in System Settings.

Siri AI shipped with macOS 27 on September 14, 2026, but Apple still calls it a beta, and it is not on when you finish upgrading. To get it:

  1. Open System Settings > Siri and click Try Siri AI (Beta). If Siri is turned off, turn it on first.
  2. Wait. This adds you to a waitlist, and Apple says wait times vary. Siri AI downloads by itself when your turn comes.

Several limits apply at launch:

  • English only at first. Your Mac's language and Siri's language must both be English. More languages are expected later.
  • Daily usage limits. Features that run on Apple's servers, including Siri AI, the photo editing tools, and Image Playground, have daily caps that vary with demand. Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in future, without saying how much or when.
  • Not available to children under 13, whatever Mac they use.
  • Not in China mainland at launch. In the European Union, Apple is holding Siri AI back from iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, but Mac users do get it, with the Mac and Siri languages set to English.
  • Two features need an M3 or newer chip with at least 12 GB of memory: expressive Siri voices and improved dictation. Every other Mac that runs macOS 27, including M1 and M2 Macs and the MacBook Neo, gets Siri AI.

According to reporting, Siri AI is powered in part by a Google Gemini model running on Apple's private servers, while Apple keeps its own models for features such as Writing Tools; Apple itself brands the whole system "Apple Intelligence."

Visual Intelligence

macOS 27 Golden Gate brings Visual Intelligence to the Mac. Press Command + Shift + Space to select a window of your screen, and Siri can answer questions about what is there or act on it, such as adding an event to your calendar. It works with what is already in front of you, with no copy and paste.

A refined Liquid Glass design

Apple introduced the Liquid Glass design in macOS Tahoe, and many users found the transparency and shadows hard to read. macOS 27 Golden Gate refines the look rather than replacing it. A new slider sets the effect anywhere from ultra-clear to fully tinted, so you can dial back the glass to make text and controls easier to read. Apps get uniform toolbars, sidebars now run to the edge of the window, and app icons carry more detail.

Better performance and stability

Apple describes a broad set of improvements that make the Mac faster, more reliable, and easier to use. Search in Spotlight and in Mail finds what you are looking for more easily. AirDrop transfers, network file browsing, and Safari page loading are all faster. Reviewers compare the release to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the 2009 version famous for fixing problems rather than adding features.

Safari tab groups and website alerts

Safari now groups related tabs into topics automatically, so a cluttered window organizes itself. Notify Me watches a web page and tells you when it changes, which is useful for price drops, restocks, or ticket sales. A feature called Describe an Extension lets you build a custom Safari extension by describing it in plain language, such as adding a button that saves your favorite recipes.

Shortcuts you can describe in plain language

Describe a Shortcut lets you automate a task by writing what you want in ordinary words, and Shortcuts assembles the required steps for you. Apple's own example is a shortcut that texts your partner when you leave work, with an arrival time based on current traffic. This is the first time you can build a Mac automation without picking every action by hand.

Describe a Shortcut is part of the September 14 release. It can use Apple's server models, so usage limits may apply.

Photos editing tools

The Photos app gains new editing tools in macOS 27 Golden Gate. Spatial Reframing changes a photo's framing after you have taken the shot, and the Extend tool fills in beyond the original edges. Clean Up, which removes unwanted objects or people, now produces better quality and more realistic fill, even in complex scenes.

These tools are part of the September 14 release, along with an enhanced Image Playground. They run on Apple's servers, so the daily usage limits apply.

Password fixes (later update)

Apple says the Passwords app will be able to change weak or compromised passwords on supported websites for you, with a click, instead of leaving you to change each one by hand. This feature is not in the September 14 release. Apple lists it as coming in a future software update.

Accessibility improvements

macOS 27 Golden Gate adds richer VoiceOver image descriptions and automatic captions for video that has none. Apple previewed further accessibility work in May 2026, including Accessibility Reader for complex documents and more reliable pairing for Made for iPhone hearing aids. These features run on device, which keeps your data private.

Smaller changes

Spotlight: Spotlight is now the front door to Siri AI on the Mac. You type a request, and Spotlight recognizes an AI prompt and passes it to Siri.

Launchpad: Launchpad does not return in macOS 27 Golden Gate, and the Apps view that replaced it in macOS Tahoe 26 is how you browse your apps, as explained in Where Is Launchpad in macOS 27.

Parental controls: Apple's child-safety controls come to the Mac in a much fuller form. Ask to Browse makes a child request permission before visiting a new website in Safari. Time Allowances lets parents manage time by app category, with guidance tailored to a child's age. Schedules set which apps are available at different times of the day and week. Communication Safety widens its protections to cover graphic images and video.

Ultrawide displays: macOS 27 adds native support for ultrawide monitors, with resolutions up to 5K at 120Hz and display arrangements that persist between sessions.

macOS 27 annoyances

macOS 27 is well liked, but reviewers and users mention irritations. Here are the most common, as of macOS 27.0.

  • Apps stuck in the Dock: Apps that keep running after you quit, such as OrbStack or Docker Desktop, stay in the Dock with a gray indicator. Right-click and choose Stop Running in Background.
  • Ask Siri everywhere: Ask Siri sits at the top of right-click menus, even when it does not apply.
  • No single AI switch: Turning off Apple Intelligence now means turning off each feature separately.
  • Jumpy Spotlight results: Results can change as you type or just as you press Return, and Command-Return now asks Siri instead of showing the file in the Finder.
  • Glass still gets in the way: Notifications can be hard to read even with the Liquid Glass slider at its most opaque, so turn on Reduce transparency in Accessibility settings.

Compatibility

macOS 27 Golden Gate runs only on Macs with Apple Silicon. For the first time, no Intel Mac can run the new macOS version. Apple confirmed this at WWDC 2025 and again when it announced macOS 27 Golden Gate.

To confirm your Mac can run it, check your macOS version and your Mac model:

macOS 27 Golden Gate runs on these Macs:

  • MacBook Neo (2026)
  • MacBook Air with Apple Silicon (2020 and later)
  • MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon (2020 and later)
  • iMac with Apple Silicon (2021 and later)
  • Mac mini with Apple Silicon (2020 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
  • Mac Pro with Apple Silicon (2023 and later)

These four Intel Macs run macOS Tahoe 26 but cannot run macOS 27 Golden Gate:

  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020)
  • Mac Pro (2019)

Every Apple Silicon Mac runs macOS 27 and gets Siri AI, including older M1 and M2 Macs and the MacBook Neo. Two features, expressive Siri voices and improved dictation, need an M3 or newer chip with at least 12 GB of memory.

If you have an Intel Mac, stay on macOS Tahoe 26. Apple is expected to provide security updates into 2028.

Rosetta 2 and older apps

macOS 27 Golden Gate is the last version to fully support Rosetta 2, the translation layer that lets Apple Silicon Macs run apps built for Intel Macs. Apple said at WWDC 2025 that Rosetta 2 would stay through this release, then narrow to a small set of older apps. If you use Intel-only apps, ask the developers for native Apple Silicon versions before macOS 28 arrives in 2027.

To help you find those apps, macOS 27 lists any Intel-only apps on your Mac at System Settings > General > About > Intel-based Apps and warns that they will not be supported in macOS 28. Check it before you rely on macOS 27 for work.

This will only impact users who are hanging on to an old version of a macOS app.

What reviewers and users are saying

Release-day reviews are positive. MacStories calls macOS 27 a good update that finishes what Tahoe started, and Six Colors calls it a very good update that fixes most of Tahoe's visual problems. Reviewers agree that the Mac feels faster, especially AirDrop, browsing network drives, app launches, and search, though nobody published benchmarks. Beta testers reported the same over the summer and called the betas unusually stable.

Siri AI gets the most attention and the most caveats. Reviewers find it good at general questions and at digging an address or a ticket out of Mail, Messages, or Notes. It is weaker elsewhere: its answers are short, it cannot rename or move files, it searches only data stored on your Mac, and it works with third-party apps only when their developers add support.
